Al Gore said it starkly: it’s time for civil disobedience to prevent the construction of new dirty coal plants.
If you’re a young person, looking at the future of this planet and looking at what is being done right now and not done, I believe we’ve reached the stage where it is time for civil disobedience to prevent the construction of new coal plants that do not have carbon capture and sequestration.
BTW, there is no such thing as a clean coal plant yet. What’s the problem with traditional coal plants? See this previous DI post with lots of links.
here is an idea that no-one mentions that could reduce dependence on oil, and reduce atmospheric carbon at the same time.
Genetically modify the Brazilian "diesel tree" (Copaifera langsdorfii) to adapt it to our climate and locations that are not practical for other crops. The sap of there trees can be used in a diesel engine as a fuel without modifications to the engine and with minimal processing of the sap. While some carbon will be released back into the air whan the fuel is burned, a much larger amount will be sequestered it the trunks and root systems of the trees.
