I would change this slightly, to say that it is time to replace the “war on drugs” with sensible medical care. Drug addiction is primarily a medical condition and should be treated as such. Handling addiction as a crime forces it underground, where it can remain untreated and entrenched — not unlike the problem of ebola in Africa, where people in some towns deny that the disease exists and, thereby, enable it to flourish.
