Political circus and fascism

I am reacting much the same as Richard Cohen to the ongoing political circus. I'm having an especially difficult time believing the lack of nuance that I'm seeing and hearing of the GOP nomination process. I am also haunted by the analysis by Political scientist Dr. Lawrence Britt regarding the characteristics of fascism. Britt compiled his list after analyzing the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia), and Pinochet (Chile).

  • Powerful and Continuing Nationalism
  • Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights
  • Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause
  • Supremacy of the Military
  • Rampant Sexism
  • Controlled Mass Media
  • Obsession with National Security
  • Religion and Government are Intertwined
  • Corporate Power is Protected
  • Labor Power is Suppressed
  • Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts
  • Obsession with Crime and Punishment
  • Rampant Cronyism and Corruption
  • Fraudulent Elections

Sanctions against Iran are provoking war, not peace.

Glenn Greenwald points out that the severe sanctions against Iran are bringing the U.S. to the brink of war. His article embeds a video featuring Iran expert Vali Nasr, who indicates that President Obama has never yet been serious about negotiating with Iran, and will not likely engage in diplomacy in this election year. The heightened tensions are going to make an "accidental" war with Iran likely. In the meantime, our so-called media is increasingly engaging in "stenographic journalism," sounding the drumbeat for war using techniques that are pathetically predictable.

Ralph Nader criticizes Obama’s lawless militarism

On Democracy Now, Ralph Nader criticized President Obama's stark militarism:

Responding to President Obama’s State of the Union address, longtime consumer advocate and former presidential candidate Ralph Nader says Obama’s criticism of income inequality and Wall Street excess fail to live up to his record in office. "[Obama] says one thing and does another," Nader says. "Where has he been for over three years? He’s had the Justice Department. There are existing laws that could prosecute and convict Wall Street crooks. He hasn’t sent more than one or two to jail." On foreign policy, Nader says, "I think his lawless militarism, that started the speech and ended the speech, was truly astonishing. [Obama] was very committed to projecting the American empire, in Obama terms."
Nader argues that Iraq was not a victory (as Obama claimed), given that we have allowed one million Iraqis to die and essentially destroyed the country. He has sent American soldiers on "lawless militarism" and then draped them as though they were Iwo Jima heroes. Nader calls Obama a "political coward," because he was unwilling to even mention the Occupy movement, the major citizen movement of our time. Obama cannot utter the word "poverty," but refers only to the "middle class," which is shrinking into poverty. Nader asserts that Obama's claims that he will prosecute financial fraud are vapid, given that he hasn't done anything significant in this area for years, and he hasn't pushed for the necessary financing to staff a meaningful financial crimes unit.

Republicans boo the golden rule

Many Christians I have met believe that Jesus invented the Golden Rule. This is not true. The Golden Rule has been adopted by ever major religion in the world. It has been around for many hundreds of years prior to the life of Jesus. Jesus certainly embraced the concept of the golden rule, however:

Do to others as you would have them do to you. —Luke 6:31 Whatever you want people to do for you, do the same for them. —Matthew 7:12
We now know that If Jesus showed up to urge South Carolina Republicans to love their enemies, he'd be booed off the stage. Maybe he'd even be dragged into a back alley and gotten beat up. What else can you conclude from this stunning exchange involving Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul? An excellent analysis is offered at a new site titled Bible Funmentionables, in an article titled "Boo! Unto Others."

On respecting dead enemy soldiers

At the Washington Post, Sebastian Junger points out the contradiction made salient by the news that American Marines urinated on several dead Taliban fighters:

For the past 10 years, American children have absorbed these moral contradictions, and now they are fighting our wars. The video doesn’t surprise me, but it makes me incredibly sad — not just for them, but also for us. We may prosecute these men for desecrating the dead while maintaining that it is okay to torture the living. I hope someone else knows how to explain that to our soldiers, because I don’t have the faintest idea.
