The stereotypes about atheism

A new movie, “God’s Not Dead,” is about to be released. From it, many church-going folks will have their stereotypes about atheists reinforced. Here’s a list provided by Nell Carter at Patheos:

1. Atheist professors are predatory, and they are out to convert everyone into ideological clones of themselves.
2. Atheists are selfish, self-absorbed, greedy jerks.
3. Atheists are cocky, self-sure, and totally enamored with their own superiority.
4. Atheists will openly threaten you, bow up, get in your face, stare you down.
5. Atheists are clearly incapable of love.
6. Atheists lack ethical boundaries.
7. They disbelieve in God because something bad happened to them.
8. Atheists are angry at God. You can just hear it in all of their voices.
9. Atheists are miserable because they believe life is meaningless.
10. Atheists have no basis for morality.

    >1. Atheist professors are predatory, and they are out to convert everyone into ideological clones of themselves.

    Just like theist professors.

    >2. Atheists are selfish, self-absorbed, greedy jerks.

    Just like everyone else.

    >3. Atheists are cocky, self-sure, and totally enamored with their own superiority.

    Also not limited to athiests.

    >4. Atheists will openly threaten you, bow up, get in your face, stare you down.

Theists kill each other over their particular flavor of theism.

    >5. Atheists are clearly incapable of love.

The kind of love that causes theists to fight religious wars.

    >6. Atheists lack ethical boundaries.

Theists claim to have a ethical boundaries, but ignore them when they don’t suit their purposes.

    >7. They disbelieve in God because something bad happened to them.

Bad things happen to theists as often as to athiests.

    >8. Atheists are angry at God. You can just hear it in all of their voices.

They’re angry at their spouse, their neighbor, the IRS, the President, Congress, the cable repairman … just like everyone else.

    >9. Atheists are miserable because they believe life is meaningless.

Theists are miserable because life really is meaningless.

    >10. Atheists have no basis for morality.

Whereas theists’ moral basis is the reason that so many prison inmates are devoutly religious.

This movie has been out for a few weeks now.

You can tell the bias of reviewers by how they rate the film. For example, the amazon reviews are overwhelmingly positive. Even when Christians don’t like the film, they can’t make themselves give it a thumbs down. And they have to go to the theater multiple times and buy multiple copies of the DVD and Blu-ray to prove that it’s a success. Everything they do wreaks of self-loathing and lack of confidence.

Let’s talk about Christians who proudly claim to be “born again” and that they are going to heaven (as if they know).

    >4. Atheists will openly threaten you, bow up, get in your face, stare you down.

Let’s talk about Christians who barricade abortion clinics.

    >5. Atheists are clearly incapable of love.

Let’s talk about Christians who are vehemently opposed to same-sex marriage.

    >6. Atheists lack ethical boundaries.

    Let’s talk about pedophile priests.

    >7. They disbelieve in God because something bad happened to them.

Let’s talk about cafeteria Christians, who pick and choose what’s convenient for them to “believe.”

    >8. Atheists are angry at God. You can just hear it in all of their voices.

Let’s talk about the (Christian-founded) Ku Klux Klan.

    >9. Atheists are miserable because they believe life is meaningless.

Let’s talk about all the world-renown composers, musicians, actors, doctors, lawyers, scientists, engineers, artists, athletes, etc., who are happy and successful atheists.

    >10. Atheists have no basis for morality.

Let’s talk about Buddhism or Confucianism, or indigenous cultures that lack an invisible deity, but which nevertheless promote moral conduct.
