New batch of quotes

I do love quotes.  When they are especially good, you get an entire novel in a sentence. Here are some that I’ve enjoyed over the past two months:

“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The next best time is now.”
Chinese Proverb

“If you cannot convince them, confuse them.”
Harry Truman

“When a true genius appears in the world, you may know him by this sign, that the dunces are all in a confederacy against him.”
Jonathan Swift

“I think the world is run by ‘C’ students.”
Al McGuire

“The United States is a nation of laws: badly written and randomly enforced.”
Frank Zappa (1940 – 1993)

“An inventor is simply a fellow who doesn’t take his education too seriously.”
Charles F. Kettering (1876 – 1958)

“Education is what survives when what has been learned has been forgotten.”
B. F. Skinner (1904 – 1990), New Scientist, May 21, 1964

“The secret of all success is to know how to deny yourself. Prove that you can control yourself, and you are an educated man; and without this all other education is good for nothing.”
R. D. Hitchcock

“The first truth is that the liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That is, in essence, fascism is ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling power. Among us today a concentration of private power without equal in history is growing.”
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt

“A bookstore is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking.”
Jerry Seinfeld (1954 – )

“Discourage litigation. Persuade your neighbors to compromise whenever you can. As a peacemaker the lawyer has superior opportunity of being a good man. There will still be business enough.”
Abraham Lincoln (1809 – 1865)

“Science arose from poetry–when times change the two can meet again on a higher level as friends.”
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 – 1832)

The following is a quote from Franklin Roosevelt. When confronted with the wishes of his progressive voters, his reply was, “I agree with you, Now go make me do it!”

“The right to search for truth implies also a duty; one must not conceal any part of what one has recognized to be true.” Albert Einstein.

War is “a monster born of hypocrisy, fed on falsehood, fattened on humbug, kept alive by superstition, directed to the death and torture of millions, succeeding in no high purpose, degrading to humanity, endangering civilization and bringing forth in its travail a hideous brood of strife, conflict and war, more war.”
– British pacifist and parliamentarian Arthur Ponsonby,

“If gay marriage taints the sanctity of marriage then why is divorce not as widely protested and challenged?”

“Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires.”
John Steinbeck

“Conservatives say if you don’t give the rich more money, they will lose their incentive to invest. As for the poor, they tell us they’ve lost all incentive because we’ve given them too much money.”–
George Carlin
