If you haven’t tried to swim against the prevailing current recently, you won’t appreciate how strong it is.

Erich Vieth
Erich Vieth is an attorney focusing on civil rights (including First Amendment), consumer law litigation and appellate practice. At this website often writes about censorship, corporate news media corruption and cognitive science. He is also a working musician, artist and a writer, having founded Dangerous Intersection in 2006. Erich lives in St. Louis, Missouri with his two daughters.
Our youngest daughter is 44, and one of the least race-conscious people I know. She is in no way racist, yet she has been compelled to adopt racist thinking. She was recently treated shabbily by a customer service representative at a large box realtor. She let it go, not something we taught her. One of the lessons we made sure our daughters learned was that poor service in retail must be called out so that the offender has a chance to redeem him/herself and improve. I asked her why she hadn’t done what was in the worker’s best interest, and she replied that the worker was black, and she had no interest in being falsely charged with racism.
I thought for a while about this, and asked her if she realized that what she had done was deny the worker a chance to learn and improve; she acknowledged that she did. “I had to weigh the probability that I could help her improve against the probability that I would be ostracized for racism, and the probability was overwhelmingly weighted against me.” The only thing I could do was weep silently.
Do the snake-oil salesmen spreading Critical Race Theory, Cancel Culture, and Confrontation versus Conversation have any idea of the harm they’re doing? We all suffer because these fools are given a megaphone and money..
