Russian Meddling in U.S. Elections? Matt Taibbi: These Claims are Often False, but that Won’t Stop the U.S. Media from Making these Claims

At TK News, Matt Taibbi lays out ten disturbing examples of the U.S. news media recklessly getting it wrong. Have they learned their lesson? Not a chance. After presenting the evidence of journalistic malpractice, Taibbi concludes:

Does this mean the Russians don’t meddle? Of course not. But we have to learn to separate real stories about foreign intelligence operations with posturing used to target domestic actors while suppressing criticism of domestic politicians. It’s only happened about a hundred times in the last five years — maybe it’s time to start asking for proof in these episodes?

This is a tough one for most people to grasp. Every nation on earth interferes one way or another in the elections, successions, policy developments and coups of every nation of interest to it. The astounding thing would be if Russia didn’t meddle in our elections. We know Canada, Mexico, Cuba, most of our NATO allies, most OPEC members, South Africa, Egypt, Japan, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Nigeria and dozens of others have an interest in US policies affecting them, and the capability to monitor and probably attempt to affect the outcomes of our elections. I certainly hope we’re doing the same thing. If not, we need to throw the bums out and get folks in there who are awake.

I don’t expect, for example, Vanuatu or Nauru to attempt active interference in Germany’s government. I do expect that they at least keep track of developing policies in Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the US. They have to as a matter of survival. The US presidential election with the largest number of nations attempting to take an active role was probably 2008. Nigeria, Gaza and Iran were all caught with their hands in the Obama cookie jar on that one. I have little doubt that both Israel and Saudi Arabia independently did their best to get McCain elected.

It’s a mean, nasty and scary world out there. US attempts to control regime change in foreign countries draw outrage from people who should know better. To see how it might be done I recommend the book, Rigged, by James Rosone. To see where our elections can be influenced through fraud, read HR1. It’s a gu8idebook.

Yep, you said it well, Bill. I don’t understand why the news media that claims Russian intervention in U.S. elections doesn’t, at least once in a while remind their news fans that the U.S. revels in interfering with the elections of other countries. We LOVE doing this and we do it often. And if we don’t like the result of the election of another country, we haven’t hesitated to remove duly elected leaders (e.g., Iran).
