Fossil fuel industry attacks plan for zero carbon in 2030.

More clear than ever, every political issue is about campaign finance reform and media reform. The fossil fuel industry (The American Gas Association (AGA) is in the process of gutting Section 433 of the 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA). Section 433 requires new federal buildings and major renovations to meet the 2030 Challenge targets (no fossil fuel energy consumption by 2030). AGA couldn’t possibly win this battle on the merits. Section 433 is worth fighting for because:

1. It demonstrates the U.S. government’s capacity to be a world leader in addressing climate change and reducing CO2 emissions.
2. It supports the tremendous progress towards a low carbon future underway in the Building Sector.
3. It saves taxpayers billions of dollars in federal energy costs.

AGA is one of the largest, most powerful special interest groups in the United States, with many lobbyists on its payroll. If it weren’t, Congress wouldn’t be listening. For more information see this article at Architecture 2030, advocating for zero carbon by 2030, and (up until now) making great strides.
