I always thought that socialism was when government became the owner and operator of major industries or businesses. Like the British television networks, or the French Health care system, or the Iraqi oil industry
Before the CIA helped Saddam Hussein elevate himself to supreme leader of Iraq., the country was a democracy. That democracy decided that the great reserve of oil they controlled belonged to the people of Iraq, and not to some private interest that owned the land above the oil.
For many years the operational costs of the Iraqi government was funded by the profits of Iraqi oil and not by taxes.Iraqi citizens paid no income tax, not property tax, no sales tax, no taxes of any kind.
Of course, the Iraqi socialization of their oil industry did deprive a handful of greedy, self serving sharmuds the opportunity to become disgustingly wealthy at the expense of the rest of their fellow countrymen. So I submit this question: Which is more evil, favoring the needs of the many, or the greed and decadence of a few?
History has shown that governments must provide some degree of socialism to remain in power. Without it, they have no power to govern and no reason to exist.
Socialism is government control of the means of production.
We have BushMcCain/GOP/RNC corporate socialism in the bailout plan to the, so far only current, tune of $700 billion. The profits are privatized.
We have the BushMcCain/GOP/RNC socialization of the Medicare Part D prescription drug plan to the tune of, so far estimated, $1.4 trillion which socializes the costs. The profits are privatized, and no competitive bidding is allowed!
Vote Obama-Biden and all Democrats to end BushMcCain/GOP/RNC corporate socialism!
