I've had a post on the backburner for quite a while about how mental pain can be as adaptive as physical pain. People who cannot feel physical pain don't survive very long, because they cannot adapt to unhealthy situations. Feelings of depression, loneliness or anger may also help us move on and adjust out of a bad situation, too. A content person is not a very productive or developing person.
