Nor is he brainwashed. I believe him to be a cynical, misogynistic manipulator whose only god is the dollar bill, and whose only goal is anything that garners him more wealth. He'll say and do anything that gets him more visibility and more publicity, because that translates into more money for Rush. His particular brand of hate was bad enough when it was espoused by single persons in individual small towns. The calamity is that his behavior and opinions are now considered mainstream and acceptable. He is a 'shining light' of the radical right conservative movement. He even gets the chairman of the GOP to apologize to him. His influence worries me, because he is an extremely negative person, but is considered 'right' by many extremists on the right, who feel empowered by his platform and visibility on the national stage. Limbaugh is not a harmless fuzz ball. Nor is he brainwashed.

He’ll say and do anything that gets him more visibility and more publicity, because that translates into more money for Rush.
