A few years ago, in a response to Jerry Falwell's "Moral Majority" and it's political activism, the president of the Southern Babtist Convention publicly stated that freedom of religion requires freedom from religion.

With over simplification so common today, people are misled to believe what ever they are told by the church. Our founding fathers obviously recognized the church as primarily a political and social entity, and not necessarily a moral one. The church is not the religion, and the religion is not the church. The church is an organization that promotes and perpetuates specific intrepretations of beliefs common to the particular faith.

In the 1700's, Great Britain was a theocratic oligarchy. The church, headed by the king was the government. The American colonies formed for many reasons. Some were started so they colonists could have their own church(something illegal in England at the time). Many colonies were started as prison colonies where debtors (and their childre and grandchildren) were forced to labor for almost no pay, most of which was then taken to pay taxes to the british government.

Thoughout history, government run in the name of religion have been the most corrupt and evil governments known. In short, When the church becomes the government, instead of the government becoming virtuous, the church becoms corrupt.
